Mediyaan YuvaSC Gives Green Signal To RSS March In Tamil Nadu; Setback for State Government
In a major setback for the Tamil Nadu government, the Supreme Court of India has granted permission to the Rashtriya Swayam sevak sangh to take out marches in the state. The decision has come as a setback for the state government which had initially appealed in the High Court to stop the RSS marches and the High Court had also given the decision in favour of the RSS.
The State government approached the Supreme Court against the decision of the High Court. It was on February 10 that the Madras High Court had allowed it to take out marches after the state government headed by Stalin had refused as it was of the view that according to intelligence reports the banned Muslim organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), might attack these marches.
Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani who appeared on behalf of the RSS had rightly highlighted that the State had given permission to the protest by marches by other organisations, such as Dalit panthers and the ruling DMK party and why was RSS being singled out.
Jethmalaini further questioned as to why RSS was not allowed to carry out the march since PFI was already banned. He further added that no incidents of violence were reported in the marches that were carried out by the RSS and also informed the court that the RSS members were attacked where they were peacefully sitting.
It was in October that the RSS had sought permission to carry out the marches so as to mark the occasion of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” and Gandhi Jayanti.
Earlier a bench comprising Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice Pankaj Mithal had heard the parties on three occasions and had reserved its judgement on March 27th, 2023.
